Dr. Sarah Ruto of the Kenya institute of Curriculum Development will chair a committee formed by the Education CS Prof George Magoha to oversee a roadmap that will lead to a smooth reopening of all learning institutions.

The government seems to be steadily and firmly shaking off the COVID-19 effects by trying to revive the different sectors of the economy. A fortnight ago the health CS announced partial opening of restaurants and hotels amid tight measures. With schools opening it will most likely be back to business to almost everything.

In a letter seen by iKUWEiKUWE updates, the nine member committee is to among other duties do:

1. Advise the Cabinet Secretary on the reopening of Basic Education institutions
(Pre-Primary. Primary, Secondary Schools, Teacher Training Colleges and
Adult Education Institutions.)

  1. Review and reorganise the school calendar as part of the COVID-19 post-recovery strategy.
  2. Advise the Cabinet Secretary on ways of onboarding students/pupils when the
    schools re-open.
  3. Document all COVID-19 related matters, lessons learnt and recommendations
    for future preparedness.
  4. Advise the Cabinet Secretary on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the
demand for education by poor households and suggest mitigation measures.
  5. Advise the Cabinet Secretary on the Health and Safety measures to be put in
place for the pupils/students, teachers and entire school community.
  6. Identify institutions that may have been adversely affected by COVID-19 and advise on mitigation and recovery measures.
  7. Submit regular reports to the Cabinet Secretary on the implementation progress of COVID-19 related programmes.
  8. Any other related duty that may be assigned by the Cabinet Secretary.

The committee is comprised of, The chair secondary schools Association, The chair primary schools Association, The chair of the Muslim Education council,The chair NCCK, CEO private schools Association, Chair Kenya parents Association and two other bodies as seen in the letter. The committee later in the day enjoined Teachers Unions after they issued demands for schools opening.

Appointment for Mr. Misori to the COVID-19 Committee

Hon. Akelo Misori from the KUPPET side was included in the committee through a letter of appointment sent to him by the education cs and seen by iKUWEiKUWE updates. Among the conditions the Unions have put forward is the decongestion of classroom in order to observe the social distancing rules, cancellation of all co-curricular activities and P.E lessons.

From the look of things the school’s might flank the gates open mid June or early July as the government aims to recover the lost time.
