In summary;

  • Traumatizing visit
  • Police, Public dilemma

Insecurity incidents in Bungoma and its environs have been on the rise in the recent past. This has greatly been attributed to many things but most importantly it hurts Bungoma residents as thugs randomly raid and steal as they avoid police nets at times. Some have been arrested, arraigned in court while some have ended up in imprison as others are released on bond with a good number still at large but what is dump founding is the courage and precision with which they strike.

On the 18 Feb 2023 a Bungoma High School female teacher living at Kiwanja Ndege was such a victim whose unwanted but calculative guests announced a brand new item on the stealing menu, writing a message to their victim.

The thugs who had their sweet time ransacked the house located about a kilometre from the Bungoma Police, cooked a meal, eat, prepared and drunk juice, wrote her a rather promissory note before carrying valuables (TV, food {shopping}, jewellery) in an operation that took at most 3hours being the time the lady was out of her house.

The lady who had initially planned to stay indoors was convinced by her unrelenting friends to go out for “Kamoja tu” at their favorite joint at about midnight returned back at about 3am to a half open gate, wide open door and an upside down house. Upon perusing through the traumatizing scene she noticed an envelope on her bed whose rather promissory message reads;

“Each Sunrise gives
You a Chance to try again
Each Sunset gives
You hope to Begin Another day”

Police dilemma:

ikuweikuwe.com has also learnt of the following concerns;

  • Laxity in patrols has been aided by lack of motivation from the government with Bungoma South lacking vehicles to fight crime. The lorry that’s only means of transport available to Police on patrol is not able to access narrow roads in pursuit on on patrols forcing the men in blue to dig deep into their pockets to hire motorbikes for the purposes of enhancing effectiveness but that not enough and its not appreciated.
  • They are also understaffed making it difficult for them to man wide areas that are characterized by darkness due to lack of lights.
  • Lack of intergovernmental coordination between them, the county government and the business community. An immediate plan to light up the town is wanting. The County should also involve business owners to invest in own security to delay and deter insecurity. The three entities can in liason greatly improve security.
  • Boda leaders to liase with the police to enhance security Esp at night since bodabodas are mostly either suspects, victims or accomplices to this vice.
  • More frequent Public baraza’s
  • Nyumba kumi should up their game, so is their remuneration
