Boost for library services as the County receives books donation
Turkana County has received at least 2650 books from the Kenya Literature Bureau (KLB), as donations to increase the book count and subject areas in the County Library to serve the reading needs of the population.
The County Executive for Education, Sports and Social Protection, Leah Audan confirmed the books covered the entire spectrum of education to effectively serve basic levels of ECDE, primary and secondary, as well as specialized areas of tertiary learning such as engineering, nursing, and computer studies.
CEC Audan added that the donation would boost the book count in the newly revamped County Library to more than 13,000 books following a series of past partnerships with the Kenya National Library Service and other institutions.
Noting that the library only had 40 books previously, County Executive divulged that plans are underway to raise Ksh 47 million through Public Private Partnership (PPP) ventures in the 2023/2024 financial year to build a fully equipped and integrated library in the County, in a move to modernize library services for the benefit of academics, research, leisure reading, and general access to newspapers/periodicals by the public.
Importantly, the donation also included braille versions for the persons with visual impairment to be sufficiently inclusive of the wide variety of readers.
The library is situated at Kenyatta Line within the Central Business District of Lodwar Municipality.
It is currently open to the members of the public.
CEC Audan said that a librarian, Hellen Mbotela, has been deployed to manage the facility.
