Teachers of English across 30 selected counties have poured to different social media platforms to express their displeasure in the manner in which their employer (TSC) has been playing hide and seek with their worthy dues.
In January, the teachers’ employer Teachers Service Commission (TSC) commenced a program dubbed Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project (SEQIP) as well as School Based Teacher Training Support System (SBTSS) funded by the world bank and coordinated by The University of Nairobi under the watchful eye of TSC as part of its capacity enhancement.
This is an ongoing program aimed at improving quality teaching in targeted subjects and areas. Among the targeted counties are Bungoma, Tana River, Garissa Lamu and 26 others
The targeted areas include sciences, mathematics and English. This program will also go a long way to help students to improve their learning experiences and to easily transition from primary school system to the secondary school.
But the first batch of teachers English who attended the training are yet to receive their reimbursement of transport and accommodation fee which they were promised that it would have been on their accounts immediately after the training.
In a surprise move the Teachers Service Commission paid all the attendees of Maths and sciences and claimed they were not responsible for the pay of Teachers of English. It later turned into ping pong and blame games as UoN said they had not received any money to facilitate the payment.
After a waiting period of over 3 months in silence, the patience of the attendees ran out as they poured to different platforms to decry what they termed “mistreatment”. In screenshots seen by iKUWEiKUWE updates the teachers demanded for their pay as soon as possible.
This week in what we have learnt as a damage control measure the TSC has started sending the disgruntled teachers half of the expected pay (ksh. 5,960) through a KCB-M-pesa account as seen by iKUWEiKUWE updates.
“Why are we receiving half what our colleagues in Maths and Sciences got?” Of the teachers lamented when contacted by iKUWEiKUWE updates.
It is still not yet clear whether they will later be paid the balance or that’s the end of the road as their colleagues in Maths and Sciences received upto ksh .12,000
When reached for comment, both TSC and UoN were unavailable.
