Speaker Wetangula was yesterday on the brink of losing Kshs. 96,000 being a contribution to a “funeral” of a purported brother in-law to late Joseph Kubende. Kubende died on Thursday March 23, 2023 after falling from a building in Roysambu Nairobi and was buried on April 1, 2023 at Bahai in Kimilili Constituency
It all started with a text message from one person calling self Ann using contact 0748 627 186, registered as Jose Medical L on TrueCaller. According to a source close to Speaker Wetang’ula, Anne who claimed to be Joseph Kubende’s sister with kubende’s image as profile photo was requesting for his contribution following the demise of her husband who met his death in Mombasa just after returning from Kubende’s funeral.
Anne indicated that the family urgently needed 96k to help get his body from the morgue for burial.
From the contribution list shared it showed contributions were underway with Speaker’s brother Hon. Tim Wanyonyi among others having already contributed. It’s nevertheless not clear whether this was just a ploy to hoodwink Wetang’ula into contributing without questions or indeed the Westlands MP had already lost Kshs. 20,000 to the con.
Just before the Speaker send his contribution, he asked his aides to do due diligence to ascertain the authenticity of the claim by Anne. It’s at this point that Kubende’s known relatives were contacted.
It turned out that non of them was aware of losing anyone after Kubende. It shocked the entire family to note that even after losing their one still someone would find it necessary to use the departed’s name to con leaders.
According to the con’s contribution list, already over Kshs. 200,000 had been raised
The con’s line has since been switched off occasionally switched on for a few seconds after I attempted to reach out meaning the con knows the family, has contacts to our leaders and subsequently reads ikuweikuwe updates
