The negotiations that led to the unveiling of Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malalah as the Kenya Kwanza Alliance (KKA) gubernatorial candidate as Bonnie Khalwale downgraded to the Senatorial position in Kakamega County was actually the clearest indicator that Dr. William Ruto was willing to make huge sacrifices to cling presidency. It also sounded as a warning shot to those contesting on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and other affiliate party tickets in Western region to prepare for a solo battle since their respective party structures wont be at their disposal unless one is among the favored MPs as listed below.

Busia meeting:

The Kenya Kwanza consultative meeting held at Bukalama resort in Matayos Subcounty, Busia County led by Ford Kenya Party Leader Sen. Moses Wetangula and his ANC counterpart Hon. Musalia Mudavadi was an eye opener to those who still believed that there will be free and fair nominations in the KKA coalition. The 29th March 2022 meeting witnessed leaders mainly drawn from Western Kenya drum up support for the absentee KK Presidential candidate DP. William Ruto as they mud slung Azimio leader Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga and his brigade.

Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malalah was the first to throw the spanner in the works by sending a warning shot to the ODM leader that Western region will be governed by their own as he proceeded to name what he purported to be a Kenya Kwanza lineup for preferred gubernatorial candidates;

  • Busia –           Nambale MP, John Bunyasi – ANC
  • Bungoma –    Senate Speaker, Ken Lusaka – FK
  • Kakamega –   Kakamega Senator, Cleo Malalah – ANC
  • TransNzoia – Kiminini MP, Chris Wamalwa – FK
  • Vihiga –        Sabatia MP, Alfred Agoi – ANC

The outspoken politician informed participants that they (Luhya leaders in Kenya Kwanza) had negotiated for 30% of government and would therefore expect the entire region rallies behind Musalia and Wetangula. In a bid to drive his point home Malalah dared Musalia to try having a governor in Migori County on an ANC… as he informed the gathering that Western leaders must be the ones guiding the region and not Raila who has Nyanza to guide.

In reference to the much anticipated BBI ruling, Malalah also took a swipe at President Uhuru and Raila saying; both yes and no are bad for you

The Kakamega Senator reminded Busia residents that the following Azimio leaders can’t be trusted to lead the region for none is running for any seat; Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa, COTUs Francis Atwoli, Cyrus Jirongo, Mukhisa Kituyi and Amos Wako

Bungoma UDA gubernatorial candidate Zachariah Barasa is likely to be the next victim after Khalwale among others as illustrated by Tuesday’s Busia meeting. Barasa was later said to have held a high profile meeting with UDA leaders where he was asked to support Lusaka’s bid as he switches to Kanduyi parliamentary seat, a request he turned down and instead informed his supporters that he will make a huge announcement this weekend.

Elsewhere, ikuweikuwe.com gathers that the following candidates have been handpicked as preferred candidates for Kenya Kwanza in Bungoma

  • Governor – Ken Lusaka (Ford Kenya)
  • Woman Rep – Catherine Wambilianga (Ford Kenya)
  • Tongaren – Chikati (Ford Kenya)
  • Kimilili – Didmus Barasa (UDA)
  • Webuye East – Martin Pepela (Ford Kenya)
  • Webuye West – Dan Wanyama (UDA)
  • Bumula – Mwambu (UDA)
  • Kabuchai – Majimbo Kalasinga (Ford Kenya)
  • Sirisia – Eng. Malaba Keya (UDA)
  • Kanduyi – John Makali (Ford Kenya)
  • Mt. Elgon – Undecided

According to my Karen rat, Kapondi is suspected to be in close ties with Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati making it difficult to trust him in Lusaka’s outfit. If this position stands, Ford Kenya candidate MCA Jane Chebet would be the outright beneficiary

Some of the UDA aspirants MCAs included, fearing for the worst have opted to go independent while some are hanging on expecting the party to change its stand.

Edwin Wanyonyi a Lwandanyi ward aspirant which brags of having 29 Kenyans wanting to dethrone the sitting MCA Tony Barasa, says;

“This is not the UDA we tried hard to build… this is exactly what our party leader mheshimiwa Ruto has been discouraging the President on… Boardroom decisions that impose leaders upon Kenyans… We are doing wide consultations and will inform our supporters on the way forward by end of week”
