West Pokot County Governor Prof. John Lonyang’apuo on Wednesday, 5 May 2021 witnessed 114 groups drawn from six wards receive KShs. 96 million being the 2nd and 3rd tranche of Community Micro-Project grants at Makutano Stadium. The project is implemented by the Department of Agriculture and Irrigation under Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture targeting groups engaged in rearing of indigenous chicken, goats, sheep, dairy, green grams and sorghum value chains.

In total, 172 groups have benefitted from the grants amounting KShs. 148 million.

About Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture (KCSAP)

The Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP) is a Government of Kenya project jointly supported by the World Bank.  KCSAP is being implemented over a five-year period (2017-2022) under the framework of the Agriculture Sector Development Strategy (ASDS) (2010-2020) and National Climate Change Response Strategy (NCCRS, 2010).

KCSAP Objective:

KCSAP Development Objective is to increase agricultural productivity and enhance resilience /copying mechanisms to climate change risks in the targeted smallholder farming and pastoral communities in Kenya, and in the event of an Eligible Crisis or Emergency, to provide immediate and effective response. The project is to be implemented through the following components:

    1. Up-scaling Climate Smart Agricultural Practices
    2. Strengthening Climate-Smart Agricultural Research and Seed Systems
    3. Supporting Agro-weather, Market, and Advisory services
    4. Project Coordination and Management
    5. Contingency Emergency Response

Project Beneficiaries:

The project will benefit about 522,000 households of smallholder farmers, agro-pastoralists, and pastoralists directly, 340,000 households benefiting from the county-level and public-private partnership investments and over 600 micro-small-and-medium enterprises.

Project Cost:

KCSAP will cost a total of  USD 279 M with  USD 250 M  financing from the World Bank and a Government contribution of USD  29 M.

Implementing Agency:

The Ministry of Agriculture Livestock Fisheries and Cooperatives is the main implementing Agency at the national level with the project anchored in the State Department of Agriculture.  County governments are the executing agencies at the county level.
