Speaking at a virtual meeting organized by Bungoma professionals under the tag; Bukusu Caucus, the United Nations Conference Secretary General addressed various issues concerning Bukusu Nation and more so his presidential ambitions… At the exclusive meeting, Mukhisa Kituyi interacted and responded to member’s questions/concerns candidly from what is believed to be his Nairobi home.
Prof. Wafula Okumu who is a senior member of Bukusu Caucus announced his liking for Mukhisa’s personality, record and approach of politics… While posing a question to Mukhisa he pointed out the need to find a way of tackling the culture of monetarization of politics aka “Khumina Sindu”. Wafula wondered how Mukhisa was going to confront that culture knowing its pros and cons
Mukhisa in his response to various concerns;
- Did not attempt to respond to the “Khumina Sindu” concern
- He thanked organizers of an impromptu coastal region meeting thru which he met aspirants who are also Bungoma and TransNzoia residents living in Mombasa when he visited to meet the Mijikenda leaders as well as those who organized the Kitengela meeting on 16.01.2020 where he met Luhya politicians in Nairobi.
A spoiler for Musalia?
The UN SG reminded participants that in 2013 against all odds he contested the Bungoma Senatorial seat on Musalia’s party where he also doubled as the National Chief campaign manager for Musalia’s presidential bid. “I lost the Senate seat because I was selling a Maragoli amongst Bukusus” ranted Mukhisa
Mukhisa took a swipe at Bungoma Senator and Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetangula for having a short memory saying back then (2013) he (Weta) accused him of supporting a Maragoli (Musalia). He reminded them that he delivered to Musalia, Bukusu votes 4 times the number of Maragoli votes he got in the 2013 presidential votes.
Luhya Unity is not about deals between political aspirants but should be integration of the Luhya Community to grow the sense of purpose, that we either win together or loose together. He encouraged Luhya leaders to concentrate on encouraging Luhyas to get ID cards and register as voters in large numbers.
Preferred Luhya Kingpin;
Luhyas MUST by Christmas this year 2021 has ONE presidential candidate, one who will;
- Managed to roll back William Ruto’s gains in Luhyaland?
- Mobilize Luhyas into getting National ID and voter’s cards with a view of voting come elections
- Penetrate other communities
If someone else comes out stronger than me on the above points… Mukhisa is willing to drop his ambitions in favor of the chosen one. Otherwise its too early to blindly support anyone
Building Bridges Initiative;
Mukhisa started by saying Kenya is at a difficult position saying the country is at the brink of default in servicing statutory obligations, not just in international debt payment but obligations of domestic nature. The UN SG indicated that;
- He CANNOT support things that compound a problem but those that solve a problem. When we cannot pay 12% to counties, public debt is growing ravaging
- He CANNOT support constitutional provisions that trebles that statutory obligations of the state to devolve funds
- He CANNOT support the creation of more political positions that will eat into public funds
- He CANNOT support a model of development where debts are used to finance recurrent expenditure
He concluded that “…I think BBI is Bullshit.., Politically It’s not expedient for me to say that… one shouldn’t misinterpret my silence for indecisiveness and/or liking for BBI… My views are sound but aren’t politically convenient to mouth now”
“Am resigning from a job whose gross salary is 3million… My gun has one bullet… am not interested in any other position apart from president… Am going to circumcise my first grandson next year, meaning am old enough to speak nothing but the truth and not sweetening statements to satisfy anyone with dishonest statements.. am running for President” concluded Mukhisa
Prof. M.J. Wanjala who was the convener of the meeting in his closing remarks thanked the SG for sparing time and assured him of total support which included building on his strength and working on his weaknesses.
