PWDs protest at governor's office on 15/7/2020

Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) today Wednesday, June 15, 2020 held a demonstration protesting against marginalization by the County govt. of Bungoma. The demonstration saw them picket right at the governor’s gate, an exercise that partly disrupted operations.

Messages on their placards;

  1. Covid-19 Civic Education fund for PWD
  2. Demand that the governor recognizes PWDs
  3. Demand for 30% AGPO for PWDs
  4. Responsive budget for PWDs

#iKUWEiKUWE Updates contacted a member of PWDs and MCA for Ndivisi ward, Hon Martin Pepela who in his remarks said…

“… This regime is not keen to support PWDs as dictated by the law… in fact the County government under the leadership of Wangamati was sometimes back sued by PWDs over failure to incorporate a PWD in the appointment of advisors where the County govt requested for an out of court settlement, a settlement meeting that I personally participated in. The County govt has nevertheless NOT implemented what was agreed in that meeting one year down the line. It has no regard for Persons Living with disabilities”

#iKUWEiKUWE has also learnt;

  • The previous regime led by Ken Lusaka left 30 million in the account for PWDs empowerment and purchase of assistive devices. An amount that was diverted to unknown use by the current Wangamati’s regime
  • The current regime has NOT budgeted for PWDs two consecutive financial years including this one
  • The govt has no regard for PWDs
  • PWDs team that financed itself to Machakos games with a promise … are still demanding for the promised refund months later
