BATTLE FOR BUSIA GUBERNATORIAL CONTEST HOTS UP
The battle for Busia Gubernatorial contest, with those who have declared their candidature on Azimio La Umoja ticket, exuding confidence they will not relent in their bid to succeed the incumbent H.E Sospeter Ojaamong whose second and mandatory term is coming to an end after August 9th, 2022 general elections.
Daniel Mogoria, who was until his resignation last week as Chief Officer in the Department of Education and Vocational Training who entered the grueling race last week, was categorical that he is not anybody’s project but that of the people of Busia County.
In a live interview on Emuria FM101.3 Joto La Busia programme on Sunday evening, Mogoria cautioned other aspirants against abuses and using the youth to cause anarchy, noting that nobody is above the law.
” My cardinal rule is to embrace peaceful campaigns devoid of skirmishes. We need each other despite the outcome of the polls; Leaders who use violence to intimidate their opponents should be told in no uncertain terms that the era of such campaign tactics died in 2010 with the enactment of the new constitution,” he said.
He went on: ” The safe person to carry the mantle from H.E Ojaamog is me but not as his project. Some people have tendencies of not completing projects that were initiated by their predecessors, this is not in my vocabulary.”
Mogoria said people perceive him to be a non-starter, telling them he is a front runner who will not succumb to the whims of being a running mate of others, adding that he has already identified two candidates from the Luhya region who are ready to be his running mates.
In response to a caller that he is Ojaamong’s project, Mogoria likened himself to former Tanzanian President, John Pombe Magifuli who changed Tanzania within six years, prompting former President to admit Magufuli did wonders he and former presidents failed to in 25 years.
Asked why he chose to venture into politics, Mr Mogoria said he was a good debater in high school, adding that he was also a good friend of former Mt Elgon MP, Fred Kapondi who was also his teacher colleague at Moding Secondary School in Teso North Sub County.
Callers also wanted the Governor aspirant to shed light on the alleged memorandum that gave the Iteso 10 years before they pass the baton.
In response, Mr Mogoria denied the existence of such MoU, noting that records indicate that in 2013 there were five candidates battling for the governorship with three from Teso region and two from Luhya.
In 2017, the number of contestants increased to seven with one Tesos, five luhyas and one luo to confirm that no such MoU ever existed.
He denied allegations that ODM has already issued a ticket to one of the four candidates who are seeking elections on the orange party ticket, terming it a figment of their imagination.
Mogoria will battle it out with Deputy Governor, H.E Moses Mulomi, Dr Paul Otuoma and Florence Mutua for the ticket that will guarantee the winner a place in the ballot for the August polls.
Mogoria outlined his achievements while in Education Department including improving infrastructure at Dirakho, Bukoma, Nambale, Katakwa, Amagoro VTCs, construction of ECDE classrooms, introduction of bursaries, Afya Elimu and Revolving fund among others.
On what he will do as the second governor of Busisia, Mogoria he will use the tools of trade including the County Integrated Development Fund, Annual Development Plan, County Strategy Fiscal Paper and Supplementary budget to continue from where his predecessor had left.
