When announcing with shock the sad news of the passing on of the Kabuchai MP, James Lusweti Mukwe, Bungoma Senator, Moses Wetang’ula, hailed him “as a hardworking and loyal member of Ford Kenya party who served his people with utmost honesty, commitment and accountability.” These are touching words and a heavily loaded message hailing a departed colleague. Let these not just be words uttered to suit the moment. Let the Senator put his words in action. What is a better or even best way to honour this “hardworking and loyal member” of the Lion party than by ensuring that a close family member completes the hard work he has been doing for the people of Kabuchai constituency. FORD-Kenya will be doing the right thing by ensuring that a family member of the late Hon Mukwe succeeds him in the by-elections to fill his big shoes. This is the most obvious thing to do and expected of a party such as FORD-K. This is also a Kenyan tradition as illustrated below:
In 1978, Jomo Kenyatta passed on, he was succeeded by his nephew, Ngengi Muigai, as Gatundu MP.
In 1985, Kyale Mwendwa became Kitui West MP in a by-election to replace his brother, Kitili Maluki Mwendwa, who had died in traffic accident.
In 1988 Lazarus Ombayi Amayo was elected to replace his brother, David Okiki Amayo, as Karachuonyo MP when he passed on while in office.
Moses Musalia, aged 28, replaced his father, Moses Mudavadi, as Sabatia MP in 1989.
George Khaniri inherited the seat from his father, Nicodemus Khaniri, who passed on suddenly in 1994.
In 2003, Jayne Wanjiru Kihara replaced her husband, Paul Samuel Kihara as Naivasha MP after his departure.
In July 2006, the 27-year-old William Kariuki Mirugi was elected as Nakuru Town MP to succeed his father, Mirugi Kariuki, who had been killed in a copter crash.
In July 2006 Sasura Hussein Tarry was elected to succeed his brother Abdi Tari Sasura as Saku MP who was a victim of copter crash.

James Lusweti Mukwe should and must also be replaced by his son, daughter, wife, brother or sister. FORD-K can best honour his legacy and appreciation for his service to the party by respecting this Kenyan political tradition.
