The two pupils ridding on a motorbike from school were on Monday 7th Aug 2023 run over by a trailer driven by a visibly drunk driver at KCC Bungoma on the Kanduyi – Musikoma dual carriageway. The truck is said to have offloaded some goods in Bungoma town and was exiting when it ran over a bodaboda rider transporting school children to their homes. Sources indicate that he miraculously escaped unhurt, but the truck dragged his bike under its belly for a distance until wananchi forced the trailer to stop.

While interrogating him some Police officers showed up in a marked Police vehicle and casually pulled him as side from an angry mob as if to arrest him only to let him go under unclear circumstances
It’s suspected that after realizing that he had been released unfairly and unlawfully he tried to leave the scene as fast as possible hence the second accident which claimed the two lives. The driver is also said to have been involved in another accident at Musikoma before he was stopped at Sibembe on Bungoma – Mumias road.

The hit-and-run driver’s attempt to was thwarted by bodaboda riders who gave a chase before attempting to lynch him. As they left him lying on the ground next to the truck, they set it ablaze.
Police who arrived at the scene met the wrath of Wananchi who stonned them away two times before they came the third time under the leadership OCS Odongo and managed to carry the body away under heavy attack from wananchi who furiously pelted them with stones.

Bungoma Police collected the body of Austin Wanjala a Moi primary school class eight pupil in a hail of stones from an angry crowd who accussed Police of negligence and outright corruption that costed lives of the two young ones and a few more injured having let go the drunk driver after the first accident.
The other victim only known as Purity a DEB pupil residing in Kitinda area had earlier been taken to St. Domaino Hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
Bungoma County emergency fire engines were unable to get to the burning truck due to lack of fuel.
