A screaming ikuweikuwe.com headline read Kimilili MP’s communications director dies due to negligence at Kimilili Hospital and therefore the content of the publication has been a bone of contention as kimilili doctors rubbish and in some cases condemned the article.
The article read in part:
“Tony Hillary Omondi who has worked with Hon. Didmus Barasa for six months was hit by a double asthma attack on Sunday 30th July 2023 at about 7:30pm. His brother Eston Oduor who has been living with him for three months informs ikuweikuwe.com that he and Tony’s wife successfully tried to resuscitate him using an inhaler.
Tony recovered and could move by himself before retiring to his bedroom to rest but he was hit by a second attack a short while later that prompted his wife and brother to rush him to Kimilili SubCounty Hospital at about 8pm.”
This attracted a public outcry while others came to the defense of the facility and MOH Dr. Shivachi.
“The whole story of Tony’s death is unfortunate and Shocking. But information given to the public is misleading and false. He arrived at hospital at 10:18pm not at 7:30pm as reported. He was already dead on arrival and delay at the gate as mentioned in the published report. He was Never admitted in male ward as said, as hospitals do not admit dead bodies. Report given does not mention the treatment given by the family healthcare provider who was managing him in the house from around 6pm when he collapsed to the time of demise when they brought to hospital. Our CCTV captions are available for review to understand time of arrival and delay at the gate if it happened.Such misleading information demolorize staff on their input. I regret this loss as Kimilili subcounty hospital is well equipped to manage asthmatic and other emergency cases when they arrive on time. We appreciate the checks and long to redeem our glory in health care”
~ Dr. Shivachi Ikura, MOH ~
“Tony died due to negligence. You can’t take more than an hour to attend to a patient who is in life threatening critical condition. The gateman was not there, only surfaced after 15 Mns to open the main gate. The usual don’t-care attitude, laxity at admission desk. Not in a hurry at all. Decisive action must be taken to end this”
~ Didmus Barasa, Kimilili MP ~
- Eston Oduor rubbishes the MOH’s statement saying they left home for the hospital after Tony collapsed but they could feel his pulse while at the hospital. He further indicates that the MOH was not in the facility and therefore cannot pretend to know more about the patient than them who were with him trying to help.
- Doctor Stephen Mulindi while speaking to ikuweikuwe.com on 31st Jul 2023 gave the most doctor-ish statement I’ve ever heard… Whereas he did not want to put the blame squarely on his colleagues he literary announced the level of negligence at the facility starting with a person in civilian who checked the patient, to access to the emergency department that could not handle the patient to insinuating that Tony’s condition was almost irreversible.
I’ll share the audio below being a hat with Dr. Stephen for you understand better what he says better.
#iKUWEiKUWE Corner:
Having listened/read all parties I wish to note the following from ikuweikuwe.com desk;
- Yes! there could have been onward emotional writing driven by the situation on the ground as reported by the brother: Patient, absence of gateman and the way they were handled at the front desk and beyond.
- It’s clear that there was no watchman at the gate, possibly he could be the one Dr. Stephen is referring to as a man in civilian who checked the patient and casually walked away.
- Dr Stephen who was at the facility at that time also blames laxity and unpreparedness on the side of Kimilili Hospital.
- Tony’s family has moved on and are scheduled to bury him on 18th Aug 2023 at Rarieda, Siaya.
- Dr. Shivachi, just like Kimilili MP said, the facility should strive to avoid this… please work on your errors as a facility.
