Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati’s Bungoma and Nairobi homes were today 4th July 2023 morning raided by sleuths in what has been greatly associated with an interview he participated in on Citizen TV four days ago.
Minutes after the Citizen TV interview on Finance Bill, Wangamati received a call from an outspoken Senator from Rift Valley who told him “Sasa wewe badala ya kukuja tufanye kazi, umeanza mambo na kelele ya TV.” that “hiyo ni njia mbaya pana pita uko. Itakupeleka pabaya.”
Wangamati didn’t take it seriously until today morning when uninvited guests arrived and demanded to search his Nairobi house for “crucial documents”. Sources indicate that he indeed gave them a go ahead and search coincidentally another team was said to have landed at his Bungoma home. It took them about 30minutes from 7:30am, an exercise that saw them constantly communicate with someone on phone who seemed to be giving them instructions. They only took away his private businesses documents including Bonito dating back to 2009
They nevertheless told him they will call him as and when need arises.
While on Citizen TV Wangamati said;
Corruption is now in the DNA of Kenyans. The accountability level of corruption at the counties is higher than at the national level. We need to endeavor to have an open system of procurement that we know and monitor… I think devolution has worked. We have seen economic development and economic emergence of the 47 towns. The automation of revenue collection is a problem….
He also suggested that its important to have a conversation as to whether its imperative to have counties collect taxes as opposed to National government
speaking to ikuweikuwe.com Wangamati’s aide says “The raid seems like was politics both local and national. There is a possibility local agents used his position on Finance Bill to push to embarrass him and grant them opportunities of attack. After all is said and done, this is part of a wider smear campaign from some quarters – especially in the wake of what the people of Bungoma are saying”
Wangamati was unreachable for comment
