Members of the Senate Committee on National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration visited Busia County Today Friday October 15, 2021 where they held a meeting with Busia County Government Executive at Hotel Breeze. The Senate Committee received an audit report on the County workforce which revealed the names of employee’s ethnic groups and other related statistics

LUHYAS ACCOUNT FOR 51% OF WORKFORCE IN BUSIA COUNTY- AUDIT REPORT
An audit report has revealed that Luhyas account for 51 per cent of the total workforce in the County Government of Busia.
The report which was read to the senate committee on National Cohesion, Equal Opportunity and Regional Integration by County Executive Committee Member for Public Service and Administration, Mr John Mwami also revealed that the County Government of Busia has employed staff from 16 ethnic groups in the country.
A total of 1781 luhyas have been employed with the Iteso community, another dominant community in the county having 1298 employees which is 37% of the total workforce.
Luos are third with 221 employees which is 6.2% of the total workforce. Other tribes include Gusii with 79 staff employed, Kalenjin (49), Kikuyu (35), Meru (6), Sabaot (6), Kuria (3), Somali (3), Taita (3), Turkana (2), Maasai (2) and Embu and Mijikenda one each.
The Senate Committee chairperson, Hon Naomi Shiyonga said the County Government is on the right track but needs to upscale the percentage of staff from other communities to 30%.
” I am also happy to note that women have been given key positions in Governor, H.E Sospeter Ojaamong’s administration, urging the leadership to ensure youths and persons with disability are accorded equal employment opportunities,” she said.
Deputy Governor, H.E Moses Mulomi said Busia is a multi-cultural county, appreciating the fact that it has made efforts to accommodate most ethnic communities in its workforce.

He said the County Government was focusing on value addition and construction of Youth Empowerment Centres to empower the youth economically.
The committee Vice Chairperson, Hon Christine Zawadi said Busia has made big strides in accommodating more ethnic communities in its workforce compared to some counties in the country where dominant communities have been shortchanged.
” It’s good to hear from the County leadership that they have rolled out income generating projects targeting the youth, adding that such ventures should also include vulnerable persons.
The committee member, Hon Mercy Chebeni lauded the department of Agriculture for the programs it has launched targeting youth empowerment.
Mr Mwami said the County Government has recognized women abilities with the County Public Service Board headed by a lady. Deputy County Secretary is a lady while out of 22 chief officers, eight are ladies.
Agriculture Executive, Dr Moses Osia said the county government has created opportunities for attachment with 100 youths offered attachment monthly at the Busia Agricultural Training Centre.
