In Summary:
- Cartel
- Rejoinder
Bungoma residents who have been using the services of Webuye Sub county hospital morgue are up in arms following the demand by the hospital administration that they only be allowed to collect bodies using a hearse or carry the casket(s) out of the facility themselves otherwise pickups and other vehicles are not allowed into the facility. The facility only allows four family members per body into the mortuary section regardless of their age, gender.
Cartel:
#iKUWEiKUWE Updates is informed by the complainant that the institution is working with a cartel of hearse owners to make money from mourners by force. An old mama in her 60s was forced to partner with her female and two male relatives in carrying the casket of their loved one from the mortuary up to the gate, 150 meters away after their pickup was denied entry. An #iKUWEiKUWE rat present who was not amused took some images before asking the family to contact #eDDUHSimiyu to help lodge a complaint via ikuweikuwe.com since they couldn’t afford a hearse like many other families he had witnessed going thru the same ordeal.
Rejoinder;
The Webuye Hospital Medical Superintendent in a rejoinder indicated that;
- The restrictions on the number of people allowed to collect a body are dictated by Covid-19 regulations as the hospital strives to reduce congestion
- Some relatives used to carry body in a blanket and that’s why the facility has ensured decency in handling the dead thru insisting on a casket
- Bodies MUST only be collected during daytime.
- The institution has NO deal with ANY hearse Company. Relatives always hire their preferred hearse(s)
- On the issue on pickup; Dr. Kisaka indicated that he appreciates the feedback he got from the public via #iKUWEiKUWE and will therefore see how to address the issue as an institution.
