Bungoma Court issues ground-shaking guidelines on the phased reopening

Following the revelation that four members of Bungoma Laws courts tested +ve for Covid-19 after a mass testing exercise, Mr. Stephen Mwanzia the Head of Station communicated a mandatory closure of the courts from Monday 7th to Wednesday 9th December 2020 for fumigation purposes

He indicated that the Courts were engaging the Ministry of Health to assess the level of exposure amongst our staff and advise on the way forward.

On 9th Dec the reopening was postponed to Today, Tuesday 15th Dec 2020 pending the fumigation exercise which has not been done but the courts opted to proceed with business minus the fumigation they had closed shop for.

Chief Magistrate J. King’ori of Bungoma Law Courts has issued DIRECTIONS ON THE PHASED REOPENING

Highlights;

  • The courts shall operate with a maximum staff establishment of 25
  • Each Court shall list a maximum of 3 hearings
  • Virtual hearings to be preferred in most cases
  • Fumigation to be done before and after each hearing
  • Cause lists to be prepared one week in advance
  • Links to be published for virtual courts
  • All Civic Judgements shall be delivered online in accordance to Covid-19 guidelines
  • Criminal judgement shall be delivered in Court
