Kakamega County Director of ICT Mr. Sam Wetungu is a man under siege following his show of interest in Politics and more so the act of ditching ODM for ANC as it is alleged that he’s eyeing the Deputy Governor’s slot in Senator Cleo Malalah’s incoming government. The flamboyant ICT guru was a big political pillar for former Kakamega County ODM Chairman and Deputy Governor Prof. Philip Kutima but has chosen to join Malalah who he believes is the best option for the county CEO’s position.
Speaking at Kabras during his unveiling by his clans men, elders heaped praise on Wetungu saying he has outstanding qualities of the next big thing in Kabras and Kakamega at large. He informed the gathering of Cleophas Malalah’s wishes to pick his deputy from the Kabras clan just before he received unanimous endorsement as the ideal candidate for that position.
The unsuspecting Wetungu never knew this would then bring hell down on him as choreographed by Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya who could not stomach this move with my rats around him informing the governor takes this as betrayal of the highest order from his employee.
Annoyed and feeling betrayed, Oparanya wrote a show cause notice letter to Sam giving him 14 days to respond just coz of the Kabras meeting that endorsed him and later another event where he attended the burial of a friend to Cleophas Malalah that ultimately led him being welcomed officially to ANC.
This draconian act by Oparanya ultimately curtails Wetungu’s freedom of expression and association as section 38 of the constitution demands.
All this happens while other Kakamega County employees do campaign for ODM 24 hours 7 days a week and have never been reprimanded nor received show cause notice letters.
My rat informs; The County officials currently campaigning include Mophat Mandela County Youth Advisor and Geoffrey Mitalo, Liaison Officer who are ODM Chairman and Secretary General respectively. Mohamed Omoro and Geoffrey Shipimilu work for the County Government but have been mostly away from their work stations planning and conducting ODM primaries
All the above are activity campaigning for ODM candidates namely; Fernandez Barasa for Governor, Raila for President, MPs, Women Rep, Senator and MCAs.
Wetungu is well remembered in Kakamega for having directly campaigned for Governor Oparanya in both 2013 and 2017 elections. In 2017 he was on Oparanya’s re-election campaign secretariat while working in Kakamega County Liaison Nairobi office but was for months a notable figure everywhere the Kakamega governor stepped during campaigns.
