Over the past weekend Police officers from Ekitale post arrested a breastfeeding mother from her home accusing her of brewing Chang’aa. Eunice who gave birth 2 months ago via CS was going about her normal chores when Police arrived and picked her allegedly for brew Chang’aa. My Ekitale rat claims she was beaten while at the police before being released when she developed complications in breathing.
On getting home her family rushed her to Hospital where she passed on.
On 10th March 2022 angry residents then opted to confront the Police demanding for justice as they bayed for the officers’ blood. Police repulsed them using teargas and rubber bullets but were outnumbered as they ran out of them… they then resorted to using live bullets that unfortunately led to a trader who is said to have been a bystander being shot. Overwhelmed the Police called for backup which arrived just in time to rescue the officers. The trader later died while undergoing treatment.

A  concerned Kanduyi MP aspirant Hon. Alfred Khangati then issued a statement on the same as follows;

It’s with deep sorrow that I have received the news of the Killing of Eunice Masai whose only crime was to fend for her family. A woman selling illicit brew cannot be a threat to the Police for her to be mercilessly beaten allegedly causing her untimely death.
My deepest sympathy goes to the families and friends of our departed daughter, sister and Mother.
I also wish to pray for the recovery of another innocent member of our community who is fighting for his life after being shot by the Ekitale Police; when together with other villagers they demanded to know how our late sister met her death.
As a former Asst. Minister in-charge of Internal Security, I know for certain that the role of police is to ensure citizen’s security. This task of hunting for local brew makers is self imposed while robbers and other criminals go free.
When a crime is reported Police take hours to arrive but rush to rob brewers.
I have lived in Europe and know that our local brews especially Chang’aa is not different from other foreign brews like Vodka and I know one of the plans of my party leader H.E. Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga is to protect local brewers because they greatly contribute to our economy.
Finally, I want to call upon the Minister for Interior Dr. Matiangi and the Inspector General of police to move with speed and launch a thorough investigation to ensure that justice is given to our people who are clearly victims of Police brutality.
We must ensure that the few bad eggs do not spoil the name of our Police service.
I will be keenly following up this matter to ensure that the victims get justice.

Hon. ALFRED KHANG’ATI ~ MP KANDUYI 2022-2027 Aspirant
